Tinnitus – a ringing sensation in the ears – can make it hard to concentrate and fall asleep, even under the best conditions. But some types of exercises can make tinnitus worse, leaving the persistent ringing all the more frustrating.
This condition can be brought on by head and neck injuries, age-related hearing trouble, exposure to loud noises, impacted earwax, stress and more. It affects one in five people and can worsen with age, though many people respond to doctor-recommended treatment methods.
Many types of exercise can help with the condition, as physical activity improves blood flow to the ear. However, it’s important to choose the right exercises for your health needs.
Extended sessions of these exercises are generally not recommended for tinnitus sufferers:
- Cycling
- Running
- High-impact aerobics
- Football
- Volleyball
- Soccer
Why the exercise caution? Long rounds of bicycle riding can leave the neck in a hyperextended position, while the other exercises tend to involve jarring movements that can strain the head and neck. As with all physical activity, you should consult with a doctor to see what’s right for you.
