Don’t Let Your Diet Hurt Your Voice

Notice a raspy sound in your voice? It could be the start of an infection – or it could be related to your diet. In some cases, what you eat and drink can control how you sound. But with the right precautions, you can help keep your voice at its top form.

Many of the same foods and drinks that can sabotage a diet can also impact your vocal cords. These are some of the biggest culprits:

  • Caffeine
  • Fatty foods
  • Spicy foods
  • Alcohol

Why the problems? All of these lead to increased acid production during digestion, which can lead to swollen vocal cords. Caffeine not only boosts acid production, but also loosens the muscle tissue that separates the esophagus and stomach. Spicy foods, specifically, can cause acid reflux. Another surprise acid trigger is mint, so be aware during mealtime.

To soothe your voice, warm tea is a quick and easy option. These varieties tend to be especially soothing for light vocal distress:

  • Lemon
  • Ginger
  • Eucalyptus
